From the moment it is laid as a seed-like egg, a leaf insect lives as one of nature’s greatest mimics. Found in South Asia, India, and Australia, “walking leaves” are known for their masquerades at all stages of life. Many species mimic brightly-colored, foul-tasting local insects (such as ants) while in their nymph stage.
With successive molts, Phyllidae become more and more leaf-like, until their final adult forms become almost impossible to spot amongst real foliage. When moving, leaf insects sway to and fro to blend in with the movement of leaves in the wind. Females are larger than males and can look like decaying or chewed-on leaves. Their incredible camouflage helps these herbivores forage undetected; some have lifespans of a year or more in the wild.
